Window Tutorial Banner

This tutorial was done entirely in PSP7, but could easily be done in PSP6. I've tried to be as detailed as possible, but if there is anything you don't understand, feel free to e-mail me.

You need to save often to keep from losing any work you have already done.
(Most images are reduced in size for quicker page loading.)

We have to create the actual window first, so open a new image New Button 400x600, transparent, 16million colors.

In the Layer Palette, add new layer by clicking on the new layer icon, accept raster layer and click OK. This is how you will add all new layers. You should now have two (2) layers with layer 2 highlighted in the Layer Palette.

Add New Layer

Select a 30 pixel wide area around the edges by double-clicking on the Selection Button Selection Button and using these settings. Click OK.

Area Selection

Click on Selections/Invert in the menu. This will select just the outer edges. Flood fill with a nice wood, I just used one built into PSP7, but you could use any image of wood that you like. Now your image should look like this. (Reduced image size for display only.)

Window Outer Edge

Go to Effects/3D Effects, choose Inner Bevel and use these settings. (In PSP6 you would use Image/Effects and choose Inner Bevel.) You will use these same settings for all wood pieces.

Inner Bevel

Add a new layer and make sure Layer 3 is highlighted in the Layer Palette. Double-click your Selection Button Selection Button and change the bottom setting to 320. Flood fill with wood. Use the Selection Button again: Left=50, Right=350, Top=50, and Bottom=300. Hit the delete button. Deselect and apply the same Inner Bevel. Your window should now look like this.

Top Window Pane

Add a new layer and make sure Layer 4 is highlighted in the Layer Palette. Double-click your Selection Button Selection Button and change the settings to: Left=30, Right=370, Top=300, and Bottom=570. Flood fill with wood. Use the Selection Button again: Left=50, Right=350, Top=320, and Bottom=550. Hit the delete button. Deselect and apply the same Inner Bevel. Your window should now look like this.

Bottom Window Pane

That is your basic window with 2 panes. Go to Page 2 to see how to create the lock and transparent panes.

This tutorial was created as a class assignment for VU's (Virtual University) PSP Tailgate Class after several classmates asked how I did the windows for a certain image I had posted on one of my lesson pages.

This tutorial has also been presented at Graphic Buds on the Member Showcase Board and at PSP Interactive Zone for the weekly Studyhall Lesson, 18 April of 2002.

Most recently it has been presented at PSP Dynasty as weekly lesson #98. If you go there and look under the Results page for lesson #98, you can see their members's postings. Beautiful windows everyone of them!

PSP Dynasty Thank You for the Tutorial Award
